4 Potentially Hazardous Summer Sex Acts

August is officially Happiness Happens Month. If you think about it from a sexual standpoint it makes perfect sense. Hormones lay dormant in the cold months, awaken in the spring, and are fully alive by summer’s end.  It’s no surprise that sun and heat are natural aphrodisiacs --- a recent study suggests that sunlight raises testosterone levels in men, boosting libido by as much as 69 percent.   Indeed, everyone looks better through tinted shades especially if one has downed a few Baily’s and Banana Coladas.  There is a reason that this 31 day period was named Sextilis in ancient times, and we at Single Edition are all for having fun in the sun.   But before you venture outdoors, you should consider these dangers that go beyond getting a little sunburn where the sun usually doesn’t shine:

In the Pool, Hot Tub or Jacuzzi: A midnight skinny dip may set the mood but the after effects may be anything but romantic. Water contained in each of these units is teeming with salt, chlorine and/or bacteria and according to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 8 public swimming pools contain enough microorganisms to be of real concern to the public. When these chemicals and germs make their way into the vagina during sexual intercourse it can lead to urinary tract and yeast infections. And while the idea of wet sex seems wildly exciting, when it happens under water liquid friction occurs (due to less lubrication) which can result in micro-lesions and irritation to the penis and vaginal walls.

In Natural Bodies of Water: If you think rivers are a natural safe-sex zone, consider this: these bodies of water harbor some very unusual bacteria, creatures and sharp objects which could put all partners at risk of foreign bites, scratches, scrapes and bruises. Limiting your love making to the beach, may also be hazardous to one’s health - a study published in the journal of Environmental Science & Technology in July 2007, found that 91 percent of the beaches examined had noticeable levels of enterococci – a bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections, while 62 percent of them had traces of E. Coli which can cause skin rashes near your private parts.

In a Moving Vehicle: A scientific survey commissioned by hands-free headset maker Jabra revealed that 15 percent of respondents have engaged in sexual intercourse or another sexual act while driving, which gives wanderlust a whole new meaning. Distracted-driving is a deadly epidemic and if you get caught in your vehicle doing the wild thing, you will likely be charged with a public indecency, indecent conduct and/or a hefty traffic violation. Not only are you putting your own life at stake but your own self-pleasure can put other people in harm’s way.

Al fresco Sex: If you’re planning to take a tumble on the green grass, remember you are entering onto the same turf where the deer and other creatures play. Caution to those out in the wild – there have been spikes in bear encounters this season, many of them looking to get some human action. Ticks and other highly infectious insects are also on the rise, so it may be safer to head back to the car, your cabin or tent!
