Single Adults are now the majority in most parts of the world.

In fact, according to Euromonitor International, the number of single person households in the world's forty largest economies increased by 12%, to 183 million, between 2001 and 2006. Over that period, nine countries recorded 20% or more growth in the number of singleton households.

Still the media will not cover our stories, the marketers leave us out of their campaigns and businesses continuously fail to address our lifestyle needs.

But imagine if we took matters into our own hands? What would happen if each one of us did? Would the single person's message not be heard?

Here are five simple ways you can start making a difference this National Singles Week:

1. Get Educated: There are plenty of serious issues that effect singles in society, from family friendly workplace policies to housing discrimination, and you should know about them. Bella Depaulo sums all the points up nicely in an article which features this week on Psychology Today. To learn more, just click here.

2. Send Letters to the Editor
: Tired of picking up news that's not relevant or newsworthy to you? Whether it's a local paper or a magazine, reach out to the editor and let them know your information needs.

3. Be a Brand Advocate: We do not need to live in a world where couples are rewarded with two-for-one discounts while singles get charged supplements for traveling. So send a note to the business or brand manager at your favorite gym, food company or travel provider to let them know there are more singles out there and they too deserve a break.

4. Write Notes to Congress: We try to stay away from politics but seriously folks, why is it that neither candidate is talking about the single demographic? From health to tax legislation, singles continuously get penalized. So, write to Congress or your local representatives to let the powers that be know that change matters to singles too.

5. Support a Non-Profit: The Alternative to Marriage Project is a non-profit organization that is rallying for single's rights, and they need all of our support. Check out their website and find out how you can get involved in helping the cause.
