A Case of Irreconcilable Differences
Q: I am wondering if you think opposites attract. You see, I'm a physicist. My girlfriend recently confessed that she believes devoutly in a number of new-age forms of pseudoscience, from astrology to the ability of thoughts to transform water crystals. As a scientist, I believe these things to be complete bunk. So my first reaction is that we are incompatible, and that we should give up our plans for a future. But she's also a wonderful, kind, person, and we really do like each another. Any recommendations on how we can live with our opposing belief systems?
While theories have proven that like attracts like, there is no exact science when it comes to matters of the heart. You are fortunate to have met such a fabulous woman and should relish the different perspectives you each bring to the relationship. Seeing the world through someone else's eyes should be embraced as an adventure, one which will lead you and your partner to a whole new world of possibility.
As long as you are both willing minded explorers, and respectful of one another's belief systems, the living and loving should come easy. If things do not progress, you can always seek out the help of a relationship counselor. Based on your note, this relationship seems too good to give up on.
