Q: What You Love About Being Single?
I love never having to defend or explain why I want to watch that stupid movie, staying up as late as I want to, having fabulous shoes, and being free to travel anywhere I want to at the last minute.
Q: Words of Wisdom for Others:
At the end of our intern year, my classmates and I all had a week off together which was unique because for the rest of residency, we would each have to cover for each other whenever one of us went on vacation. I really wanted to go to Costa Rica and asked if any of my classmates wanted to help organize a trip. Everyone thought it would be too much trouble, too expensive or just too far away. When no one else wanted to come, I decided to go by myself. My friends were all dumbfounded. They asked incredulously what I planned to do. When I explained that I planned to fly to San Juan, rent an SUV and drive over dirt roads, through the jungle to a small beach town they all thought I was crazy. But then, one by one, each of them asked me if they could come with me. In the end, we all went together and had such an incredible bonding experience with each other that sustained us through the rest of residency. They all agreed that none of them would have even considered going except that they had been so inspired by the idea that I would have gone by myself. Sometimes I think being single allows you to be a more daring, spontaneous and courageous incarnation of yourself.
