Anti-Depressants and Your Libido

Q: Several months ago I was laid off from my job. I am generally a happy go lucky type person but this setback has put me into a funk that I cannot seem to get out from under despite exercising, eating right and staying connected. My doctor has prescribed a mild anti-depressant to help my moods but I am afraid this will interfere with my sex drive and performance. I would love to get a second opinion and was hoping you could give me your take on this?

There is a wide range of options when it comes to depression.  Some doctors recommend anti-depressant medications as a first option for adults facing moderate to severe depression; other doctors recommend that you explore other pathways before deciding on medication.

It's difficult to comment because I don't know your medical history, but from what you wrote, it doesn't sound like you've had many "funks" in your life that you couldn't get out of.  If that's the case, you may want to consider psychotherapy as an option before trying medication.  Just like all medications, anti-depressants have side effects which can include: loss of libido, appetite changes, weight gain, fatigue or drowsiness, constipation, sleep changes, just to name a few.  Some people report one or more side effects, others report few to none.  It definitely varies from person to person.
