Benefits for Dance Beginners

Q: I recently signed up for dance lessons with Fred Astaire Studios. I am thoroughly enjoying this new activity but I am hardly breaking a sweat. Can you tell me if there are any benefits to classic dance lessons if you are a beginner?

Dance lessons are a great way to get a little activity in your day, and it’s good to hear your are enjoying it! There are a few benefits to dancing, the most important being that you engage all the muscle groups of the body. While dancing you are also moving the body in directions that are different than everyday moves and therefore developing muscles more. The downside of beginner dancing is there is a lot of stillness while learning steps and slower moves. Once you get more skilled, you will be moving more with less breaks, working the heart more and therefore burning calories and body fat.

I would suggest you continuing the dance lessons and work your way up to the next level. Practice on your own to get more activity. You can also add a walking program or other forms of aerobic activity to increase the heart rate between your lessons. Good luck!
