Bleeding in Between Periods

Bookmark and Share Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Q:About six months ago, I started sleeping with a man and noticed spotting in between periods which generally happened post-intercourse. We are not in any way rough between the sheets and even though I have been to the Doctor 3 times, my gyno says all tests indicate I am "normal." I am having a hard time believing her and was hoping you can shed some light on the issue.

There are many reasons that you may be spotting after sexual activity. And it's hard to make a diagnosis without a physical exam, but here are some of the more common reasons women experience bleeding after sex:

1) Inflammation of the cervix

2) An infection: for example, an sexually transmitted disease like chlamydia or gonorrhea can cause bleeding. Many times, these STD's will not cause noticeable symptoms, so it's important to get checked out.

3) A polyp, or benign growth on the cervix.

4) Uterine fibroids

5) Pelvic inflammatory disease

Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. But bleeding is not normal after sex, so I recommend getting a thorough work-up.
