Charmed By My Trainer

Q: I started working out with a personal trainer and it has been a great experience. The problem is that my trainer is extremely handsome and I am finding it hard to work out without feeling insecure. While I don't think it's fair business, I am afraid I have to move on. Any ideas of how I can proceed in the same club with a different trainer without hurting his feelings?

When most of us work out, we rarely wear make up, have on little clothing or body hugging workout gear, are sweating, maybe groaning, have the body in odd positions, trying to stay coordinated. gee...what's to feel insecure about? You have every right to feel uncomfortable! Especially with a hot looking trainer.

The truth is, you are paying for the session and should get the most out of it. People change trainers all the time. It's best to be up front and honest with your trainer by saying something like - "I really enjoy working out with you but I often find myself distracted and not able to concentrate. I want to get the most out of my workouts but don't always feel comfortable, which I think holds me back." You could also say "I love working out with you and have learned so much but am thinking of trying somebody new who uses a different approach to see how I like it." Your trainer will understand, you shouldn't feel guilty or that it's unfair. People tend to get close with their trainers, but the bottom line - it's a business, you are paying for a service. You should get what you pay for. Good luck.
