Counseling Coverage for Sex Therapy
Q: I would like to seek the help of a sex therapist but am wondering if this is something which is covered by health insurance? If so, is this information something to which my employer would be privy?
From my clinical experience, sex therapy is covered by most health insurance. There ususally is no problem having them pay for all or some portion of the therapeutic session but the extent to which you receive reimbursement depends upon your carrier and the type of policy you have. Check with your insurance company before starting therapy and I suggest you only go to a 'certified' sex therapist whom you can find at AASECT.org. Anything that is discussed in the office of a sex therapist is confidential so I can't imagine your boss being privy to the information, but you need to check with your carrier on how therapy (of any sort) confidentiality is maintained.
