Dealing with a Devil in another Department

Q: Though I work in a cross functional project organization my unit is fairly autonomous. Though I seem to get along with everyone in corporate offices, I am constantly shut down by one female executive for no apparent reason. How do I deal with a b*#@ who has it out for me without losing my cool or reporting her to human resources?

Having to deal with the “devil” at work can be distressing.  Just about everyone at some point in their career will have to deal with someone who goes out of their way to be unjustifiably rude or cruel.  Why do they do it?  Often it is insecurity that is behind their behavior. By being cruel, they feel superior and in control.  Avoid getting into a dispute and losing your temper with this person.  Don’t lose your control because that is her end goal.  Often times, if you don’t succumb to their treatment, they will lose interest and move on to another target.  Keep track of the times and dates of these incidents. Please remember, serious situations require HR or your boss’s intervention. If you do end up talking to HR, your notes with specific details will be helpful in explaining the situation.  There is no reason that you or any other colleague should be subjected to unfair treatment by a peer or senior executive.
