Frozen Desserts and Ice Cream Treats

The image of a  scorned woman curled up in a blanket on her couch as she digs her way to the bottom of a pint-sized container of Rocky Road ice cream is all too familiar. That's because frozen desserts and ice cream treats are the perfect pick-me-up for meltdown moments.

But as we all know, singletons have evolved from the pathetic downtrodden as they were once were portrayed (thank you Bridget Jones), into a powerful, financially independent and energetic consumer segment.

Luckily this season the ice-cream manufacturers have rethought their strategy and are finally offering cool, decadent and/or calorie conscious single-serve ice cream treats and frozen novelties. Unfortunately, the marketers behind the brands still continue to play it safe, targeting kids of married moms and pops everywhere. But despite their mass neglect (or deliberate ignorance) of adult singles, each of these treats offers "just for one" portions that are well worth the review!

Look Who’s Screaming Now

For a Decadent Fix

Ben and Jerry’s
: To help the dazed and confused avoid the munchies, Ben and Jerry’s now offers single unit sized “kiddy cups.” Loaded as you like it, with pure gooey decadence and a handy spoon attached, they come in fun traditional B&J’s flavors like Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Strawberry Cheesecake, Cherry Garcia and Vanilla. This season’s new additions include Mint Chocolate Cookie and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.  At more than 200 calories a container and a whopping 12 grams of fat, this little serving still goes a long way.

Haagen-Daz: If you’re a purist, Haagen-Dazs has also introduced their own line of teeny sized snacks. While the packaging is much the same as their Vermont creamery counterparts, this line takes a more classic approach, offering three flavors including Vanilla, Chocolate and a creamy Dulce de Leche (think caramel). Weighing in at more than 250 calories per serving, there is simply nothing plain about them and they are more readily available in supermarkets across the nation.

On a Lighter Note

Ciao Bella
: For icy sorbets and/or gelatos nothing beats Ciao Bella, and now they are serving up 3.5 oz. ultra premium mini cups in their most popular flavors, Turkish Pistachio gelato and Sicilian Blood Orange sorbet respectively. Next up, for release this summer, are Tahitian Vanilla gelato, Chocolate Hazelnut gelato, and Alphonso Mango sorbet. At less than 70 calories per serving, it’s more refreshing and actually less calories than a shot of vodka or tequila!

Blue Bunny:
There is something about the Personals ® line by Blue Bunny that, if you’re a 1970’s kid, will remind you of your grandmother’s house.  We’re not sure if it’s the combination of strawberry, vanilla and banana which is reminiscent of the classic Neapolitan trio or the plain re-sealable container which is so basic it recalls the decade. Nonetheless, this treat has fewer calories (170 per serving) and as much of that old fashioned rich ice cream taste.

Edy’s: Another healthy choice and as much of the taste as their Slow Churned Ice Cream Line, comes from Edy’s. Larger in size than the demi-tasse, weighing in at 6 ounces per serving, one snack size cup should be enough to satisfy those late night cravings.  This mostly guilt-free pleasure is available in Vanilla Bean, Chocolate and a refreshing Chocolate Chip Mint.

Stay tuned for more next week, as we review minis and novelties from the frozen food section!
