Genuine Matters

Q: I have been married for a short time, divorced and no kids. I want to start dating and am looking for someone really genuine. Can you help?

Many of the inquiries we receive are from single men and women looking to find an attractive, smart and/or successful mate. It is refreshing to hear that you are looking for much more.

So far the nice women and men who I have been privileged to counsel have frequently expressed that they are too often overlooked because of their kind nature. Chances are you have met plenty of genuine men but did not pay them much attention because they (a) were not as loud, aggressive and or confident (b)built walls to protect themselves from further disappointment or (c) were actually too busy doing good.

Hence my words of advice are to observe more and look out for people who are caught up in the right things. What they do, who they hang out with and where they spend their time will reveal a lot about a person's character. A good rule of thumb is to remember that given the option, good guys will always pick the dive or sports bar over the trendy one. Putting yourself in situations where the focus is on the activity (like a special interest or hobby club, or a volunteer event) and not necessarily on the dating aspect often creates fertile ground for meeting people with genuine intentions. You should also never make assumptions about someone without getting to know them. Some of the prettiest/most handsome people have the deepest hearts and may be lonely and looking for love, just like you. Just the same, a harsh or cold demeanor may just be a self-preservation mechanism from someone who has been hurt before.

Best of luck!

Sherri
