Insurance at Group Rates for Independents
Q: How/where can a freelance consultant in need of health insurance get affordable coverage at a group rate?

They generally cannot but there are some limited options in certain states. Some states permint coverage for consultants or 1099's on group medical plans as long as the consultant has an exclusive contract with that group. Indeed, in some states such as New York and Connecticut, there is a Freelancers Union which allows U.S. citizens in certain freelance occupations and with defined hours to join their group plan. There are numerous restrictions but it is worth taking a look. Most consultants who work for a variety of firms need to look at the individual marketplace for health insurance. In many instances, those plans are less comprehensive than group plans and cost more money.
