Landing a Job in A New City

Q: I am in the process of relocating to a new city on my own. Should I wait until I secure a position before moving or start my search once I get there? Also, how can I best go about finding a job in a new city where I have no contacts?

In these economic times, it would be preferred that you have another position lined up before resigning from your current job. If that is not possible, do your homework before packing your bags. It’s critical that you understand the job market in your new city. Research “hot” industries and not so “hot” industries. Find out what companies recently went through lay-offs and what companies are moving into the area. Most of this information is public and can be found via the internet. This information may lead you in the right direction for job leads or cities to avoid. I would also advise you to give yourself enough lead time to circulate your resume on job boards and with local recruiting agencies. Find out about career fairs being hosted in the area. Remember, you may have to take a few trips to the area to scope out the job market before taking the plunge.
