Meet Your Mate on a Mat

Yoga - It’s an ancient practice that calms nerves, promotes mindfulness and can improve overall performance and flexibility. But can practicing your sun salutations change your love life? Certified Yoga instructor, Laura Kallen, believes it can. |
Ms. Kallen, the Founder of Creative Wellness Products, just released an innovative Balanced Yoga DVD which she believes will benefit singles. According to Kallen, yoga allows the practitioner to be in tune with one’s self and teaches individuals to speak their truth more easily.” It’s that self-awareness and authenticity which she believes helps reduce relationship insecurities and fears.
Fortunately, Ms. Kallen’s sentiments could not be timelier. According to the Yoga Journal, approximately 15 million people practice yoga in the United States and more than 6% of people in Canada are practitioners. With more studios offering classes that are exclusive to singles, many are learning the mat is a good place to mix, mingle and even meet a match. Understandably some yogis do not find it appropriate to be combining practice with pleasure, but there are plenty who are signing up for these sessions. Unlike gym memberships, at $10-$15 a pop there are usually few strings attached.
Yoga classes geared toward solo students are springing up across the country. On April 24th, The Center for Yoga in Birmingham, Michigan will be conducting a Partner for Yoga workshop. During the hour and a half session guests will perfect poses and positioning, round-robin style with members of the opposite sex. And each week in Glastonbury, Connecticut the Sacred Yoga Center conducts their Singles Relaxation Yoga for Stress Relief sessions. This one’s a beginner power class that is followed by an after party. In the heart of Brooklyn this May 15th, The Local Yoga Studio will host Kundalini for Singles: You are your own Soulmate. Instructors Sarah Bernier and Shawn Dempewolff have developed a program which promises to include ancient ice-breaking techniques and an equal number of men and women.
Of course for those who prefer to do the downward dog at their own pace and in privacy, there’s always Ms. Kallen’s Balanced Yoga DVD. This is one pro who knows that ‘being in tune with your body and all the sensations that can manifest” can be explosive.
