Breakfast Food Round Up:
If you haven't already heard the news, our two favorite morning take-out chains are capitalizing on the notion that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
If the thought of an over exuberant (not to mention commercialized) Rachel Ray makes you want to crawl right back into bed, some good news is that Dunkin™ Donuts may finally be feeling the same way. The company is hoping to draw back its grittier, much less chipper, morning clientele with a selection of flatbread breakfast sandwiches with DDSMART, a menu of better-for-you food and beverage options. Think Egg White Flatbread Sandwiches, one with turkey sausage and the other a veggie option, both less than 300 calories, with 9 grams of fat or less.
Similarly, Starbucks is hoping to make a healthy comeback with 5 new to-go menu items. Their new breakfast options range from 140 to 390 calories and boast whole grains, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. They include the Power Protein Plate, Perfect Oatmeal and Berry Stella pastry.
In the frozen food category, Heinz is capitalizing on the morning meal madness but in this case with at-home convenience. Adding to their Smart Ones success, the Company which holds exclusive licensing rights to Weight Watchers frozen foods, just came out with Smart Ones Morning Express - four handheld breakfast sandwiches and quesadillas that are quick and good for you too. (If you're not too calorie conscious but still want to cut some fat and calorie content, may we suggest that Jimmy Dean has a delicious D-Lights croissant and breakfast line.)
Newer to the scene, SoLean debuts with a breakfast lineup of grab-n-go products that offer a healthful blend of natural lean ground meat and soy protein. The SoLean(R) brand breakfast products consist of the All-American Stuffed Sandwich, Southwestern Stuffed Sandwich, and the Sausage, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Muffin all available at select Target Super Shops, Whole Foods, Krogers and Kings.
On a fluffier note, if you love your pancakes but do not want to deal with the prep time or mess, Batter Blaster, is pancake mix that comes in an aerosol can. That's right, it may come in a canister that looks like easy cheese, but it is certified organic. The good news is that you can make 28 four inch pancakes, one at a time, so you are not stuck with leftover mix. Batter Blaster is now being sold in Costco and will soon be distributed in Safeway, Lucky, Raleys, Whole Foods, Molly Stones, and Andronicos!
In an effort to maintain shelf space, General Mills continues to churn Yoplait lights with 3 new fruity flavors including a dose of Pineapple Upside-Down cake. Still, Greek Yogurt continues to be the rave in the dairy aisle. The 3 new flavors just introduced by Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt (Honey, Blueberry and Vanilla) each have 0% fat and just 90 calories per 5.3 oz.-serving, twice the protein of regular yogurt and fewer carbohydrates.
And last, if feeding the kids in the morning is a constant struggle, Breakfast Breaks is the solution for you (even though they might be asking for Kraft's new Bagefuls or those Whole Grain Pop Tarts from Kelloggs). Each of these happy-healthy kits are comprised of a convenient single-serve box that contains a Bowl Pack cereal from General Mills, a 100% fruit juice box from Minute Maid, a nutritious snack such as raisins or a fruit grain bar, as well as utensils.
