Overcoming Exercise Addiction

Q: A friend of mine who is recovering from an eating disorder recently joined a gym. It seems as though she is spending way to much time and energy working out and I am sure this is not doing her body any good but am not sure how to help her. Are there any resources, information or support groups for people who develop an exercise addiction?

I am sorry to hear about your friend, but she is lucky to have you to watch out for her. Many people who are recovering from any addiction tend to replace it with another one. Your friend could be using exercise as a substitution for her food addiction. I will assume she is getting professional help and support for her eating disorder and if not, it is imperative you help her find someone. Addictions are not something easily approached without professional help. You are a good friend to want to help and the best thing you can do for her is find her professional help. Most communities have local centers and support groups that deal with these particular issues and she can get the professional attention she needs.  www.WebMD.com is a good resource for pointing you in the right direction and can offer suggestions for treatment.
