Q: I have been experiencing headaches which start during sex and am not sure what can be causing them. My doctor says they are anxiety related, can this be the case or should I be more concerned?

Headaches that are triggered by sex, or more often orgasm, are not uncommon.  Some people complain that the pain begins as a dull ache on both sides of the head that intensifies slowly as sexual excitement increases; others complain that sharp pain occurs immediately after orgasm.  For some people, it lasts a few minutes; others have symptoms for hours.  No matter which type you experience, it can be debilitating, to say the least.

There are several, possible causes of sex headaches.  Some people tighten their head/neck muscles during sexual activity.  This may be the underlying cause for you, if you tighten these muscle groups while stressed/anxious, the pain can build during sex.  Other causes include: dilating blood vessels, anemia, sinus infection, low blood sugar and a side effect of certain medications.

I'd recommend seeing a doctor to rule out any underlying issue: side effect from medication or anemia, etc.  Preventive medication can be prescribed to help ease the pain.
