Q: I just landed a new job which will require a lot of commuting time so I must purchase a car. I just found out that insurance prices tend to drop for drivers of SUVs since inurance companies see these as safer cars. Is this true and should I invest in a mini-van?

Vehicles are rated based on a symbol for Collision Coverage and Comprehensive Coverage (damage to your car other than Collision.)  These symbols are determined based on a combination of value and type of car.  For example, if two cars have the same value and it’s significantly more difficult to find parts for one it may carry a higher symbol and therefore a higher premium.  Liability can vary based on the type of car you drive and how you use it.  The liability rate for two similar cars such as an SUV and Minivan are likely to be about the same. As I recommend to all persons purchasing or leasing a vehicle, call your carrier beforehand to get competitive pricing and estimates.
