Speed Dating Has its Privileges

Q: I am brand new to New York City and am trying to make new friends, and maybe/hopefully make new opportunities for my love life. I thought it would be fun and a new experience to go speed dating so I convinced my roommates to come with me. Is this a good idea? Is there anything I should know? If it;s not a good idea, do you have any suggestions to help a newcomer besides the pretentious clubs?

How exciting to be single and new to New York City! I am certainly a fan of speed dating, assuming you go in with a light attitude. This grown up version of musical chairs will certainly get you in front of a few new people and can make for a fun night out, especially if you go with a few friends. The one drawback is that the imposed seven minute time constraint may make the dates seem more like an interview. I would also highly recommend meet and eat options like "It's Just Lunch" and EightforEight."

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to start looking for a share house on Fire Island, the Jersey Shore, in the Berkshires or the Hamptons. Most of these are posted on Craigslist starting in April, and can make for meeting life long friends in this city. If you like outdoor activities, look for some interesting excursions on MeetUp.com or, better yet, consider Club Getaway for a weekend away.

Enjoy your new life in the Big City!
