Q: I am a newly single male and ever since my ex and I split, I have been experiencing social anxiety. I am wondering if this could be a passing phase and if not what are my options to get better?

It's not uncommon to experience anxiety after a major life change.  For most people, it is a passing phase.  The tell-tale sign is the length that you have been experiencing your symptoms and if they are getting in the way of your daily functioning.  If you are experiencing emotional discomfort, fear, apprehension or worry consistently for weeks on end, it may be time to see a professional, especially if it is disrupting your normal activities.

Like other phobias or anxiety disorders, social anxiety can be addressed and treated effectively with a combination of therapy, group sessions and/or medication, if necessary.  There's no reason to suffer needlessly.  Get the help you need if this has been going on for too long!
