Up in the Air Employee Seeks Reliable Outplacement Services
Q: I was recently laid off from my job and promised outplacement services and support from my employer. The company that was supposed to assist with my transition has not really been effective. I am wondering if you can recommend a good and affordable organization that can assist me at this very difficult time in my life.
The outplacement services industry has seen a deluge of unemployed people compared to past years. As a result, many of these firms are overwhelmed in servicing clients. Despite the frustrations you are experiencing, don’t give up! Be persistent in getting the assistance you need. The best strategy is to drive the relationship with the provider by requesting multiple meetings with a career counselor, attend career workshops offered through the provider and demonstrate that you are doing your career homework. By communicating your needs and tenaciously following-up, you have a better chance of being visible and getting the support you need. Great low-cost resources are available to supplement the outplacement services or if necessary, replace altogether. Consider contacting the Career Services Center or Alumni Services at your former college. Visit your local unemployment center which most likely will have free services to help with career transitions. Lastly, check out web-based career information systems that can aid in career planning and job hunting. Many career counselors utilize these tools to help clients. If you cannot afford to hire a career counselor, much of the information they use is accessible via the internet.
