Q: I have to go in for a colonoscopy. The problem is I live far away from my folks and most of my friends have to work. Is it really necessary for me to have someone take me home after this procedure?

Yes, because you will receive sedation, you will need someone to drive you home. Colonoscopy is an examination most often performed in an outpatient setting. It is most often used to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. And although, you'll need to take it easy for a few hours afterwards, you will start to feel like yourself again very soon after the sedation wears off.

Here are some tips that will hopefully help you out:

1. Make Car Concierge Arrangements: Many cities and hospitals, such as Cleveland Clinic, offer car transportation services for singles or out-of-state patients.

2. End of Day or Weekend Scheduling: Try to set up your appointment later in the day or find a Physician that will do the procedure on Saturday so that you can be accompanied.

3. Extend Down Time: The amount of time you can rest afterward may vary from place to place, so sk your physician if you can stay longer, especially if you're still feeling groggy.

4. Fuel Up: Since you will not have eaten prior to the procedure, it is important that you bring a nourishing snack along like orange juice, some almonds and yogurt to get you back on your feet.
