YAZ Users, Should I be Alarmed?

Q: I have been taking YAZ birth control for a year and just found out that there is a huge class action law suit against the company that’s being spearheaded by Erin Brokovich. Some of the side effects they have reported include sudden severe headaches, unusual swelling or pain in the legs or arms and blurred or double vision. Are these complaints legitimate and should women who have been taking YAZ switch to another form of birth control?

Just like with any birth control medication, YAZ has certain side effects.  The side effects can include: blood clots, stroke and pulmonary embolism. Some studies suggest that side effects of YAZ are associated with the hormone desogestrel which can cause changes in the blood clotting system, allowing blood clots to form more easily.  But these side effects can also occur with the use of other hormonal contraceptives.

Having said that, certain women are at higher risk of these unwanted effects than others.  Women who have high blood pressure, clotting disorders, diabetes, a sedentary lifestyle and/or smokers need to discuss the risks with their doctors.  I recommend speaking with your doctor either way, as your doctor can help alleviate your concerns and assist in making the best decision for you.
